Olympic Gold Medalist and Sierra™ Resort Elite Team Rider Hannah Teter hosted her annual Hannah’s Gold celebration on December 30 at the Sierra Pub. The pro snowboarder from Belmont, Vermont has made South Lake Tahoe’s Sierra Resort her humble abode since snatching the 2006 halfpipe gold in Torino, Italy.

For the last 8 months, team Antics has been zigzagging across the nation like possessed tornado hunters, feverishly in pursuit of the Perfect Party. Here, party can be loosely defined as a gathering, cultural nexus, music festival, skating expo, art gallery, witches’ brew, etc. I mean, a hot dog eating contest can be considered a party so long as there is Peter Frampton music playing.
As we wave goodbye to 2008, it feels only natural to reflect and marinate in our own nostalgic tapenade. I thought about contriving a ‘12 Days of Antics‘, but then remembered that I hate Christmas (somehow I always manage to have an extended allergy attack), and opted instead for a more prosaic list. Out of the hundreds of events we put on, the following is a run-down of the top ten West Coast Antics affairs for 2008. You might want to fetch a bib to quell the drool about to distend from your open mouth!

With one of skateboarding’s top teams, Plan B has oodles of talent to go around. What with P-Rod, Ryan Sheckler, Pat Duffy, PJ Ladd, Jereme Rogers, Ryan Gallant, Brian Wenning, Danny Way and amateur Scott Decenzo, how could you lose? But even with that much sheer ability, I’m happy to say that Plan B is not above putting out a ’zine showing the team rip rompin’ in New York, Frisco, Portland and points north, south, east and west.

Peanut Butter Wolf

In just over two weeks, the Manhattan incarnation of The Knitting Factory, a hallowed downtown club, will close down. In anticipation of this event, the venue is playing host to a number of jam-packed showcases leading up to the location’s demise.
For this particular date, rapper/turntablist/illusionist Edan hosted a bizarre mishmash of local and West Coast acts. The main event was Peanut Butter Wolf, who put a new spin on McLuhan’s media theories when he performed an audio/visual juggling act.

The North Face and Apple launched a new free iPhone application earlier this month that will prepare snow addicts with up-to-date weather and map info about winter resorts around the world. The information beamed into your iPhone will be snow conditions with current and expected snowfall, detailed daily forecasts and wind direction and speed information. Who knew meteorology could be so gnarly?

Dan Deacon‘s night did not go exactly as planned. The Baltimore-based musician, known for his electronic adventures where iPods and computers come first, had extended his one-man live act to something a bit larger: a 14-person ensemble. On this, the group’s debut night, Deacon hid out of sight with his electronics down in front, while 14 all-male musicians stood on stage and played synthesizers, keyboards, guitars and various forms of percussion.

Before blogs, ’zines were the poor skater’s voice and photo gallery. You’d think with the explosion of the Internet they’d be all but dead, but like the old school skate rats who keep putting ‘em out, you just can’t keep ‘em down.
My buddy Rob Locker of AZPX Skateboards got together with his son Mason and put out a ‘zine a while back with silly drawings and rad skating all over it. Of course, being the self-absorbed rapscallion that he is, he named it after himself, calling it “Rubber Toe,” which after all is Spanish for Robert. All in all, it was a pretty dang fine first issue. And it did so well he’s doing another. Heck, he’s even started a skateboard company called Rubber Toe…

As part of their weekly Noise series which combines indie, pop, electronica and nu disco, BETA Nightclub welcomed world renowned superstar DJ and producer A-Trak to the Mile High City on Friday night. With the best sound system (my ears are still ringing) in all of Denver, it was only appropriate to have one of the best behind the one’s and two’s. Blending and mashing away a slew of electronic beats, A-Trak took over and fed the electro craving masses with song after song never missing a beat.

Last week Filter magazine, Antics and erockster dusted off a little Christmas cheer and threw the Rock ‘N’ Bowl Holiday Party at the All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock. It was a sprightly affair, replete with karaoke, dancing, Rock Band, screen-printing, and even a sloppy Santa Claus, on whose lap attendees posed for pictures (photobooth courtesy of Polite in Public) and dictated from their Christmas lists. I asked for The Dark Knight and a government bailout.

One thing about having good friends is that they remember your sorry butt come birthday time. So, despite the potential downer of reaching his 41st year on this earth (that’s 317 in dog years), my friend and fellow degenerate punk rocker John Cormack didn’t have to cry into his milk and cookies on his birthday this year. Instead, Corey and Monica of Joker’s Skateshop in Huntington Beach opened up their backyard bowl bonanza to Cormack and company to get their shred on.
